Buffalo wings always seemed a weird description for the ubiquitous sports bar snack food. After all, Buffalos don’t have wings, and they’re actually describing chicken wings. Confused? Us too. So we checked out what Wiki had to say about the history of the phrase -

Buffalo wings, chicken wings, hot wings (in the Southern United States), or simply wings are chicken wing sections (called flats and drum sticks) that are deep fried and coated in sauce. Standard Buffalo sauce is composed of only two ingredients: a vinegar-based cayenne hot sauce and margarine or butter. In some areas outside of Buffalo, New York, Buffalo wings are prepared with a breading, although traditional Buffalo wings are not prepared in this way. Buffalo wings are named after the city of Buffalo, New York, where they originated. In Buffalo, locals do not call them “Buffalo wings”, but rather just “wings” or sometimes “chicken wings”. The appellation “Buffalo” is now commonly applied to foodstuffs other than wings that are seasoned with the sauce or variations on it.

Interesting stuff. Which brings us to this staff pick, a neat little iconic logo featuring, why yes indeed, a buffalo with wings. Perfect for a company involved in the snack food business, this design would also be quite adaptable for other uses (sports team comes to mind – especially one that’s been sponsored by a sports bar) and the simple iconic treatment lends itself to a wide range of uses. Read about the pricing and purchase of this design here. And if one Buffalo with wings wasn’t enough, we’ve also released another one.

This travel agency and/or vacation logo has always been of the faves around the shop – in part, no doubt, to it’s ‘homage’ to the Indiana Jones series (of which we are all huge fans. Suitable for a travel agent or adventure tour operator, this design features all the travel necessities; map, compass and a landscape right out off the serengeti. Warm color palette (4-color required) and nicely balanced elements make it work, both as a logo and as an illustration.

A strong design of this nature also demands a strong font workup, so we’ve also featured some suggested font use (above – as featured in the original project presentations) that will give you an idea of how the typography should look, and whether or not a strapline is applicable. If you’re interested in this design, you can purchase the exclusive buyout rights here.

A few years back, it was an insult to be considered a ‘computer geek’. Now, its a badge of honor, and quite common, even among the corporate set – take a look at the success of Best Buy’s Geek Squad. Accordingly, the requests for ‘geek’ and ‘nerd’ themed logos has shot up at the shop.

Here’s one of our staff picks, released today through our design catalog. This little fellah was originally worked up for a computer services company, but rejected in early rounds of design. After sitting in our archives for a few years, we’ve finally added him to our design catalog. If you’re interested, you can purchase this design here.

Story of Icarus. While most of you are probably familiar with the legend of Icarus, some of it bears repeating.

Almost sad to see this Icarus design go. Highly stylized, yet still quite simple treatment of a central character in Greek Mythology, this Icarus icon could be utilized in a wide range of applications (though the theme is more or less laid out). While most of you are probably familiar with the legend of Icarus, some of it bears repeating, courtesy of Wiki, and tells the story of Icarus and his father escaping from a hellish prison…

Daedalus fashioned a pair of wings for himself and his son, made of feathers and wax. Before they took off from the prison, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, as the wax would melt, nor too close to the sea, as the wax would dampen. Overcome by the sublime feeling that flying gave him, Icarus soared through the sky joyfully, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted his wings. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.

A little more detailed than our knowledge. Good to know.
